 97AD - “Glevum” founded by Roman Emperor Nerva

 918AD - Lady Aethelflaed, daughter of Alfred the Great, refortifies Gloucester & defeats the Vikings. She was buried at Oswalds Priory. The city becomes well known for it’s many churches & priories (Franciscan Greyfriars, Dominican Blackfriars, Carmelites Whitefriars, Benedictine St Peter’s Abbey (now Cathedral), & Augustinian Llanthony Priory). 

 121AD - Henry III crowned here aged 9.

1327AD - Edwards II is buried here after his murder at Berkeley Castle. 

1483AD - Ricahrd III was known as Duke of Gloucester before he became king. He incorporates the city in 1483. 


1580AD - Elizabeth I grates Gloucester Royal Port status.

1643AD - Humpty Dumpty is named after a cannon aimed at Gloucester’s walls in 1643 during the civil war. The canon explodes & the city holds out for 26 days. 



1943AD - Britain’s first jet was built by Frank Whittle in Gloucester.
